The Hong Kong-based games retailer says weeks of cyberattacks prompted the temporary closure while it checks and strengthens its systems.

Hong Kong-based games retailer Playasia has temporarily taken its online store offline for a full security audit and work to strengthen its systems, CEO Jan Neuhäußer said in a statement reported by IGN on October 22. Customers cannot access the store during the shutdown.
Neuhäußer said the decision followed weeks of increasingly sophisticated and relentless attacks against Playasia and several trusted partners. Founded in 2002, the retailer sells region-exclusive video games and English-language versions released for Asian markets, alongside toys and collectibles.
Neuhäußer described the attacks as a coordinated campaign, saying Playasia was listed as a target alongside thousands of other digital-first companies. He said the company had reported the attacks to authorities and cybercrime units worldwide and was sharing information to help them pursue those responsible.
IGN reported no evidence linking Playasia’s shutdown to a newly disclosed vulnerability in PHP, a programming language used for web applications.
The reopening date and whether customer data was exposed remain unclear. The company plans to complete its security audit and strengthen its systems during the closure. Neuhäußer asked customers to follow Playasia’s social channels for updates.
