The Centre Pompidou has unveiled a €105 million centre in Massy, south of Paris, to bring its stored collection, conservation workshops and loan operations together. Centre Pompidou Francilien – fabrique de l’art also includes public exhibition space, with October preview weekends ahead of its formal inauguration in March, The Art Newspaper reported.
The institution’s roughly 150,000 Modern and contemporary artworks include works currently stored across eight rented locations. The new facility will provide a single home for works that are neither on display at the main museum nor on loan. That storage role has become more important with the main Centre Pompidou closed for renovations until 2030.
The transfer is planned over the next two years, using 645 trucks. After unloading, staff will examine each work in the studios and treat or decontaminate it where necessary before moving it into storage. Large sculptures and installations will stay on the ground floor; lighter works will occupy the two upper floors.
Alexia Fabre, the new centre’s director, told The Art Newspaper that the workshops will put restoration, framing and conservation teams in one place. The site will also dispatch the roughly 6,000 works the Centre Pompidou lends each year. Its proximity to Orly airport will help that operation, the newspaper reported.
Most of the three-storey building is devoted to storing and caring for art. The storage rooms and conservation and restoration workshops are not open to the public; visitors have access to a separate area that includes exhibition galleries.
| Area | Size |
|---|---|
| Whole building | 30,000 square metres |
| Storage | 13,000 square metres |
| Conservation and restoration workshops | 4,000 square metres |
| Visitor area | Around 3,000 square metres |
| Exhibition galleries | 2,200 square metres |
October’s three “Prélude!” preview weekends are distinct from the formal March inauguration. The centre plans two exhibitions a year. Its inaugural show, “150,000!”, will trace the collection’s history, acquisitions and arrival at Massy, alongside conservation issues. Conferences and workshops will also explore how artworks are restored.

The black, gold and green edition follows September’s sold-out preorders. Nintendo’s replenished launch-day stock also quickly sold out.
