Premier League matchweek 9: Arsenal beat Liverpool 1–0 to go top
Arsenal lead with 24 points after all 10 matches were completed. Brighton beat Manchester City 1–0, Chelsea beat Manchester United 2–0, Coventry beat Sunderland 3–1, Everton won 1–0 at Newcastle, Brentford beat Nottingham Forest 2–0, Bournemouth beat Leeds 2–0 and Tottenham beat Crystal Palace 2–0; Hull drew 2–2 with Ipswich and Aston Villa drew 1–1 with Fulham.
Kai Havertz scored in the 16th minute as Arsenal won at Liverpool on 1 November, moving to the top of the Premier League. Before the match, Arsenal were second behind Manchester City on goal difference, with both clubs on 21 points.
The win was Arsenal’s first league victory at Anfield since September 2012. Havertz’s 46th Premier League goal made him the competition’s leading German scorer, passing İlkay Gündoğan’s 45.
All matches in the round have now finished, with Arsenal on top with 24 points. Brighton’s win at City was its first away league victory there and City’s second consecutive league defeat.
Everton move seventh
Everton beat Newcastle United 1–0 on 2 November, with Thierno Barry scoring in the 49th minute. Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek let Tyrique George’s shot slip under his body, leaving Barry to tap into an empty net.
Newcastle substitute Jacob Ramsey was sent off after two yellow cards in stoppage time. Newcastle did not put a shot on target until the 86th minute.
The result moved Everton to seventh and left Newcastle 13th with 11 points from nine games. It was Everton’s first top-flight away win since February, when they also won at Newcastle.
The league loss was Newcastle’s second defeat by Everton in five days, following a 3–1 away loss in the Carabao Cup. Barry had 8 goals in 12 appearances across all competitions this season after the league match.
The rest of the round
Chelsea’s home win left Manchester United 17th with seven points, above the relegation zone only on goal difference. Coventry climbed out of the bottom three after starting its match in 19th place. Before Liverpool played Arsenal, Coventry were 16th with nine points in the partial table, while Sunderland were 20th with five.
After losing at Brentford, Nottingham Forest were 19th with six points from nine games in the partial matchweek table.
Both Brentford goals went in off Nikola Milenkovic. The first was an own goal after Murillo misjudged a long clearance to Dango Ouattara; the second was credited to Igor Thiago after Jaydon Anthony’s low cross. Al Jazeera reported that Forest’s defeat kept Manchester United outside the bottom three at that stage.
Julio Enciso equalized for Ipswich after Hull had come from behind to take the lead. At Aston Villa, Nicolas Jackson put the hosts ahead in the 39th minute from Johan Manzambi’s pass. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki’s own goal gave Fulham an equalizer in the 64th minute; after saving an Alex Iwobi header, Suzuki dropped Iwobi’s ensuing corner over his own goal line under no pressure.
Evanilson scored in a fourth consecutive Premier League match in Bournemouth’s win over Leeds. Archie Gray scored in the 24th minute and Jan Paul van Hecke in the 73rd as Tottenham beat Crystal Palace.
