Railway has urged all users to replace secrets and credentials stored on its platform after an investigation indicated that an unauthorized party may have obtained some decrypted customer data, BleepingComputer reported on October 22. The warning covers private registry credentials as well as other stored secrets.
The cloud hosting provider detected suspicious activity earlier that week in systems that store customer environment variables. These are configuration values used to run applications; they can include sensitive credentials. Railway said an unauthorized third party may have accessed encrypted variables and obtained the decrypted contents of some of them.
Railway lets developers deploy and run applications, databases and other backend services. Its environment variables may hold API keys, which allow applications to access other services, along with database and registry credentials. Possible access to decrypted values therefore concerns the secrets themselves, not just their encrypted form.
The company’s initial analysis suggested that only a subset of users might be affected. Even so, Railway advised every user to take two steps immediately:
Railway said it had paused all deployments while investigating, preventing users from rolling out new application versions. A build prepares an application to run; deployment puts that version into service.
The status-page update cited by BleepingComputer, dated October 22 at 08:44 UTC, said builds had resumed for Pro and Enterprise workspaces. Deployments remained delayed, with many queued. Builds were still suspended for Hobby, Free and Trial workspaces, with restoration planned in that order.
Railway said it would directly notify users whose accounts were confirmed to be compromised and provide further details.
