The SafePay ransomware gang has breached at least 600 organizations since August 2024, German, UK and US intelligence agencies say. Their advisory, reported by The Hacker News on October 22, covers North America, South America, Europe and Australia.
The agencies describe attacks that lead to stolen data and the deployment of ransomware—malicious software used to demand payment from victims. The documented entry points include known security flaws and compromised login details.
According to the advisory, attackers exploit known vulnerabilities in edge devices—equipment at the boundary of a network—and other internet-exposed products. Alternatively, they use exposed login credentials or brute-force attacks, which repeatedly try passwords to gain access.
Once inside, the attackers maintain access, obtain higher levels of permission and move between systems within the victim’s network. The reported sequence then proceeds to data theft and ransomware deployment, extending the breach beyond the system or account used to enter.
