Games-services provider Side has acquired Roboto Entertainment and opened a studio in Chengdu, China, expanding its game-art operations. GamesIndustry.biz said the company had appointed Roboto founder Andrea Cordella as its global head of art and head of the new studio.
Cordella founded Chengdu-based Roboto in 2014. The company specialises in environment and world-building art—the settings and worlds players explore—and has worked on console and mobile games. Side already has locations in Shanghai.
The appointment gives Cordella responsibility for Side’s art work worldwide as well as leadership of the Chengdu studio. He said his team would continue its creative work while collaborating with teams around the world and supporting developers on a range of projects.
Side chief executive Deborah Kirkham said the acquisition reinforced the company’s regional strategy. She described China as one of the games industry’s most important markets and said Side’s team there wanted more work. The purchase price was not stated.
Cordella and the Chengdu studio will work closely with Side’s Shanghai locations and its teams across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

The black, gold and green edition follows September’s sold-out preorders. Nintendo’s replenished launch-day stock also quickly sold out.
