Police say fake activity adverts direct victims to install an app before callers posing as officials or bank staff demand money, information or valuables.

The Singapore Police Force has warned of an Android malware scam involving fake social-media advertisements, with at least 62 cases reported since April 2026 and losses totaling S$989,000. The Hacker News reported the police warning on October 22.
Police described a sequence that combines app installation with unsolicited calls: victims first respond to an advertisement, then face demands from people pretending to be government officials or bank representatives.
The fake advertisements promote activities and programmes for seniors, water-based fitness activities and recycling initiatives, police said. They instruct victims to download an Android Application Package (APK), a file used to install an Android app, supposedly to register for a programme or arrange a service.
After victims install the application, scammers call without being asked, police said. Posing as officials or bank representatives, the callers falsely claim that the victims’ devices or bank accounts have been compromised, or that the victims are implicated in criminal activities.
The callers then persuade victims to transfer money, disclose banking credentials or personal information, or surrender valuables, purportedly for investigations, police said.
