Sony has acquired the feature-film rights to psychological horror game Mouthwashing, with Karyn Kusama attached to direct, The Hollywood Reporter said on 29 October 2026. The deal secures adaptation rights, not a production greenlight—approval to begin making the film.
Developed by Sweden-based Wrong Organ and published by Critical Reflex, Mouthwashing first launched on PC in 2024.
Mouthwashing follows 5 crew members stranded aboard the space freighter Tulpar after it crash-lands on an asteroid. As supplies dwindle, isolation and mounting paranoia expose divisions among the crew.
Players experience the game from a character’s viewpoint. Its story unfolds out of chronological order, combining surreal imagery with themes of responsibility, denial and the consequences of unchecked power.
The Hollywood Reporter put PC sales at nearly 1 million copies. It also cited studio figures for views of content about the game:
| Platform | Views |
|---|---|
| YouTube | 63 million |
| TikTok | Nearly 1 billion |

The bands are scheduled to play Estadio de los Deportes on 6 March 2027 in what Billboard calls Queens of the Stone Age’s first non-festival Mexico City concert since 2014.
Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay have been chosen to write the screenplay. They previously worked with Kusama on the psychological horror thriller The Invitation in 2015 and the thriller Destroyer in 2018.
Scott Derrickson, C. Robert Cargill and Vince Cheng are attached to produce through their company Crooked Highway. The company has a deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment to produce feature films for Screen Gems.
Wrong Organ confirmed the deal, and Critical Reflex said Screen Gems will produce the adaptation. No cast or release window has been announced.
