Sony Japan has marked the UBP-X700/K, its last standalone Blu-ray player, as discontinued, according to Tom’s Hardware, citing FlatpanelsHD. The report says Japanese customers can no longer buy a new dedicated Blu-ray player directly from Sony, narrowing their choices for a separate device to play video discs.
Sony stopped shipping the players in February 2026. The discontinued listing is a later step, not a new shipment halt: Tom’s Hardware suggests that sales after February relied on existing inventory.
The withdrawal does not end the options for playing Blu-ray discs. Tom’s Hardware identifies the PlayStation 5 as Sony’s remaining playback device and says other manufacturers, including Panasonic, still sell standalone players. Buyers seeking a dedicated player rather than a PlayStation therefore still have alternatives outside Sony’s lineup.
A separate Sony plan concerns physical game discs rather than standalone video-disc players. According to Tom’s Hardware, the company has already announced plans to end physical PlayStation game-disc production by January 2028.
