Microsoft says the release addresses screen flickering, unexpected restarts and lengthy reboots. Reviewer Tom Warren says it is too early to tell whether it also improves the laptop’s laggy feel.
Microsoft says its October 22, 2026 firmware update for the Surface Laptop Ultra resolves issues that could cause screen flickering, unexpected restarts and lengthy reboots. Firmware is software that controls the laptop’s hardware.
Users and reviewers had encountered problems from launch, Windows Central said on October 26. The release came six days after the laptop launched. Its reviewer said lengthy reboots had made installing updates and drivers take twice as long.
Tom Warren, a senior correspondent at The Verge, described the same fixes in the October 29 Notepad newsletter. Warren said he had encountered problems during his review and was still waiting to see whether Nvidia or Microsoft would address a “strange laggy feeling.” He said it was too early to tell whether this update addressed that impression.
Microsoft lists the release in Windows Update as “Microsoft Corporation System Hardware Update (200.0.7.0).” It also lists additional bug fixes and general performance improvements without identifying them individually. Surface updates arrive in stages, so not every device receives them at the same time.
Owners can open Help & support in the Surface app to check update status. Selecting Check for updates opens Windows Update, where available updates can be installed. Microsoft says owners should restart the laptop afterward to complete installation.
Firmware updates cannot be uninstalled or rolled back to an earlier version. If the laptop still does not work correctly after installation and a restart, Microsoft directs owners to its Surface help page to describe the problem and follow the recommended support steps.
