SUSE CEO Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen announced an approximately 10% cut to the company’s global workforce of 1,900 in a 2 November 2026, memo seen by The Register. That implies roughly 190 jobs, a calculation rather than a confirmed final count.
SUSE develops and sells open-source Linux software to business customers. The cuts follow a voluntary-separation and early-retirement option that the company confirmed in September 2026. SUSE said participation was voluntary for both employees and the company, with no predefined targets.
Van Leeuwen attributed the restructuring to automation and SI changing how software companies operate. He said modern tools were helping teams work faster, reducing operational overhead and layers of management, and greatly diminishing the need for some existing roles.
He said other roles would evolve over the next few years as SUSE accelerated investment in high-priority areas and reduced emphasis elsewhere. He described the cuts as necessary for the company’s long-term sustainability and said they reflected changing organizational needs rather than employees' talent or commitment.
SUSE has not outlined the specific roles at risk. The company said its decisions considered how roles could evolve, which activities could stop and which needed to expand.
SUSE is privately owned by Swedish private-equity firm EQT. The Register said EQT bought the company in 2018 for $2.5 billion, listed it in Frankfurt in 2021 and took it private again in 2023, and was reportedly considering a sale in March 2026.

The additional 50% tariff was removed from some Canadian machinery and packaging products on 30 October and extended to other goods, including certain waste products.
Affected staff are to be informed by 4 November, with employee representatives nominated on 5 November. Individual meetings are scheduled to begin at the start of the following week.
Employees are scheduled to receive a briefing on SUSE’s fiscal 2027 strategy on 16 November 2026.
