Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has been elected chair of the American Film Institute’s board of directors, The Hollywood Reporter reported on October 22. He succeeds Bob Daly, who held the position for 17 years. Sarandos won by acclamation, a form of collective approval.
The appointment puts Sarandos at the head of a governing body that helps determine the institute’s priorities and guide its national education programmes.
Sarandos has overseen Netflix’s content operations since 2000 and served as its co-CEO since July 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
His new chairmanship is separate from Kathleen Kennedy’s role as chair of the institute’s board of trustees. The directors serve as the trustees’ executive committee. Both boards bring together leaders from film and television and share responsibility for setting institutional priorities and guiding the education programmes.
