The agency’s October 15 letters also allege that three routers exceeded power limits. TP-Link says it will address confirmed issues if needed as its new Wi-Fi 8 routers await US approval.
In letters dated October 15, the US Federal Communications Commission’s Office of Engineering and Technology alleged that TP-Link included false or incorrect information in authorization applications for four routers, including high-end Archer models. The agency also alleged that three of the four operated above permitted power levels. TP-Link still lacks approval to sell its latest Wi-Fi 8 routers in the United States.
The letters follow a March 2026 FCC rule restricting authorization of new consumer-router models made wholly or partly outside the US. They do not impose a new blanket sales ban: models authorized before the rule can still be sold.
In a statement to Tom’s Hardware, which relayed Bloomberg’s reporting on the letters, TP-Link Systems said results from routine FCC spot checks can vary. It said it would work with the agency on technical questions and address any confirmed issues as swiftly as possible if necessary.
For a new foreign-made router, the approval process requires a determination from either the US Department of Defense or the Department of Homeland Security that the device poses no national-security risk. The maker must also explain why it does not currently make the router in the US and provide a time-bound US manufacturing plan. The reported process has not yet resulted in an exemption for TP-Link.
In October, TP-Link announced a proposed $1 billion venture with Key Tronic to manufacture Wi-Fi 8 routers in the US. The company’s international operations began separating from its China-based business in 2022, and TP-Link announced the restructuring was complete in May 2024.
