The UK government has established the AI Biosecurity Lab and committed £100 million ($134 million) to research aimed at detecting biological threats and speeding the development of vaccines and medical treatments, Engadget reported.
The lab is part of the government’s National AI Biosecurity Initiative. It will operate as an independent nonprofit, bringing together life-sciences researchers and biosecurity specialists—experts in protecting against biological threats—to work with advanced superintelligence (SI) systems.
The government says these systems offer opportunities for scientific discovery but also create biological risks and could make harmful activity easier. It expects the lab’s research to strengthen the UK’s and other countries’ ability to withstand biological threats, including those enabled by advances in SI.
The government’s funding commitment is separate from the credits pledged by OpenAI and Anthropic. Those credits are for access to technology, rather than cash funding.
