La Liga round 11: Barcelona beats Alaves 6–1 to retake first place
Barcelona leads with 30 points after beating Alaves 6–1. Atlético Madrid won 2–0 at Levante, Athletic Bilbao beat Real Sociedad 2–1, Real Madrid won 3–0 at Racing Santander and Valencia won 1–0 at Elche. The Guardian’s 2 November report listed Deportivo–Osasuna for that evening.
Defending champion Barcelona returned to first place in La Liga with 30 points after its 31 October home win over Alaves and remains ahead of Atlético Madrid, second with 28 points, and Real Madrid, third with 27 after their away victories.
Atlético had briefly taken the lead on 31 October before Barcelona played, so Barcelona’s victory restored the previous order at the top.
Against Levante, Atlético’s Morten Hjulmand had a 16th-minute goal disallowed for offside following VAR intervention. Alejandro Grimaldo opened the scoring in the 36th minute, giving Atlético a 1–0 halftime lead, and Giuliano Simeone scored the second in the 62nd minute to complete the scoring. Grimaldo is a Spanish left wing-back who joined Barcelona’s youth system in 2008.
Derby win for Athletic, away win for Valencia
Athletic Bilbao beat Real Sociedad in the Basque derby, while Valencia won away at Elche. Real Madrid’s victory at Racing Santander came on 1 November 2026.
