Sir Patrick Stewart, known for playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men, died aged 86 at his Los Angeles home on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, his family said in an Instagram announcement relayed by Public Radio of Armenia.
TheWrap said Stewart’s representatives shared the statement, which appeared on his official Instagram account on Thursday, 29 October 2026. The statement described a “brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer’s Disease and Lewy Body Dementia”. It said family and friends had surrounded him with live music, prayer, tears and laughter.
Stewart came from Mirfield in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966. His family described a career that subsequently spanned Broadway, film and television.
He gained international fame as Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, beginning in 1987. He returned to the character in feature films and in Star Trek: Picard, which ran from 2020 to 2023. His other major screen role began in 2000, when he played Professor Charles Xavier in the original X-Men film, returning in multiple films.
Public Radio of Armenia attributed his Tony Award nomination to Macbeth. TheWrap instead attributed it to his portrayal of King Claudius in a 2008 production of Hamlet.
The family’s statement paid tribute to the dignity, compassion and humanity Stewart brought to his work and life.
His representatives asked for memorial contributions instead of flowers to the Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources, TheWrap said.
